Think you can't rock Red Lips? Think again!

Red Lipstick is easily boldest statement you can possibly make with your makeup. Think about it. Stoplights, stop signs, and brake lights are all red, and they all serve the same purpose: TO STOP TRAFFIC. It's so bright and sexy, it refuses to go unnoticed. It's iconic, timeless, powerful. Wearing Red Lipstick demands attention to your smile, brightens your teeth, and screams "KISS ME!" to everyone who lays eyes on you.

....if it's done right, that is.

So many women are afraid of red lipstick. They either think that it doesn't work for their skin tone, it looks too flashy, or it makes them look cheap. I'm here to tell you that none of that is true. Every woman on this earth can wear red lipstick, and look just as hot as Marilyn Monroe while rockin' it. It just takes a little bit of professional advice, or it will end up looking like your lips are screaming for help instead of attention.

So I'm here to give you some do's and don'ts... because every woman deserves to know what it feels like to have that runway-ready confidence that red lips brings.

1. DO Get the right Red.
This is the most important part. You can't just go into Wal-Mart and grab a tube of red lipstick, because it wont match, and you'll forever be turned off to red lips. Take a look at any makeup collection, such as YSL, you will notice that there are at least 5 different shades of bright red. The reason for this is because they all have different undertones. Just like foundation, you need to pick an undertone that complements the tones of your skin, or it wont look right. My personal favorite is YSL Rouge Pur Couture #14. You may want to have a makeup artist help you with this, because it can be tricky. Start by swiping a stripe on the back of your hand. It will either show up as a pink, orange, or neutral red. Keep trying each red until it looks completely neutral, like a stop sign. Congratulations, you have found your perfect red.
2. DON'T forget the importance of your skin.
Red lips not only draw attention to your actual lips, but also to the skin around them. Start with a foundation that matches your skin perfectly, preferably one with a matte or natural finish such as YSL Perfect Touch foundation. Apply the foundation with a foundation brush, and be sure to use a concealer around your mouth. The point is to create a flawless appearance. Set the foundation with a loose powder to lock it in place. Pick a rosy blush with the same undertones as your lipstick, and use a bronzer and highlighter to frame your face and accent your cheekbones.

3. DO line your lips.
Red Lipstick tends to bleed and fade easily, so you need to keep it in place with a liner. Use a lip liner that either matches the lipstick, or is one shade deeper. Draw slightly outside the actual colored part of your lip-line, to the outer edges of the lips... but stop there. The point is to plump them up, but you have to stay on that little ridge directly outside of your lips, or it will look like you haven't developed your motor skills correctly. Next, fill the lips in with the liner slightly. This just locks everything in place and keeps the color bold.

4. DO pick your favorite finish.
Now, it's time to apply the lipstick. Stay directly on top of the liner, and apply 2-3 coats of the lipstick. Use a lip brush for accuracy, and don't blot. It needs to be a perfectly even coat. If you want to keep a classic, old-hollywood look to your lips, stop here. It should have a very subtle sheen, which is perfect for the bold look. If you prefer a bit more of a matte finish, apply a translucent loose powder to your lips, and touch up the foundation around your mouth if needed. If you're feeling extremely bold, you can add a clear or red gloss to give it a candy-apple appearance. But be careful, gloss can make lipstick fade faster, and that wont be pretty.

5. DONT look like a streetwalker.
Fire-Engine red lips say enough on their own, so seep the rest of your makeup neutral. Check out Marilyn, above. Her lips are the focal point of her face, and they REALLY stand out. Everything else is very natural, which keeps the overall look classy. You already have foundation, blush, and bronzer on, so your face should be flawless. Be sure to use a good brow pencil or powder to fill in your brows, because with bold lips, you need to balance your face out and keep a polished appearance. Keep your eyelids clean, apply a few coats of volumizing mascara such as YSL Volume Effet Faux Cils, and add some fake eyelashes to make your lash line really stand out. Use a thin line of black eyeliner on the outer corners of your eyes, and VOILA! You have completed your red-hot look!

6. DON'T forget to accessorize!
Red Lipstick looks best with the right outfit. A little black dress is always amazing, but throw some red heels or a red bracelet on, and your look will be even hotter! If you want to take things to the next level, check out the previous post about Victoria's Secret hair, and you will be Hollywood Glam in no-time!

Now look in the mirror, smile, and let it all sink in. It's a little shocking, yes, but it's supposed to be. Throw your shoulders back, and rock those lips girl! And be prepared for a LOT of compliments :)
